Center for Security and Emerging Technology
The Center for Security and Emerging Technology in Georgetown University has recently been awarded a $55 million grant from the Open Philanthropy Project to establish the new think tank. This group is dedicated towards policy research at intersections of national and global security. Jason Matheny is the group's director. He was previously the director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (or AIRPA). Matheny has a vision to help policymakers better understand new technologies' security implications and the potential threats to society.

Analyst Lead
As the Lead Analyst at CSET Georgetown, your responsibilities include conducting surveys about U.S. China S&T competition as well as global movements of emerging technologies talent. As a CSET analyst, you will collaborate with Professor William Hannas to create and execute survey projects. His research is at the Center. He is also active in the university’s student government. His research interests extend from cybersecurity to foreign/internal policy.
Director of Data Science
Catherine Aiken is the Director of Data Science at CSET Georgetown. She graduated with a B.A. She received her B.A. degree in Mathematics and her Master’s in Data Science (George Washington University). Before joining CSET, she managed the communications department and conducted human-subjects research at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She holds a B.A. and a doctorate in political science both from the University of Maryland. from Georgetown University.

Since its inception, the Center for Science and Technology at Georgetown University received funding of nearly $100 million. The Center is funded by donations from outside institutions and by organizations like Bill and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The Center will be able, for the next 20-years, to continue its operations through the new grant. How does AI work?
An algorithm is a set or instructions that tells the computer how to solve a particular problem. An algorithm can be expressed as a series of steps. Each step has a condition that dictates when it should be executed. A computer executes each instruction sequentially until all conditions are met. This repeats until the final outcome is reached.
For example, suppose you want the square root for 5. If you wanted to find the square root of 5, you could write down every number from 1 through 10. Then calculate the square root and take the average. However, this isn't practical. You can write the following formula instead:
sqrt(x) x^0.5
This is how to square the input, then divide it by 2 and multiply by 0.5.
Computers follow the same principles. It takes your input, squares and multiplies by 2 to get 0.5. Finally, it outputs the answer.
AI is it good?
AI is both positive and negative. It allows us to accomplish things more quickly than ever before, which is a positive aspect. Programming programs that can perform word processing and spreadsheets is now much easier than ever. Instead, we can ask our computers to perform these functions.
On the negative side, people fear that AI will replace humans. Many people believe that robots will become more intelligent than their creators. This means they could take over jobs.

Who invented AI?
Alan Turing
Turing was first born in 1912. His father was clergyman and his mom was a nurse. He excelled in mathematics at school but was depressed when he was rejected by Cambridge University. He discovered chess and won several tournaments. He was a British code-breaking specialist, Bletchley Park. There he cracked German codes.
He died in 1954.
John McCarthy
McCarthy was born on January 28, 1928. Before joining MIT, he studied mathematics at Princeton University. There he developed the LISP programming language. He was credited with creating the foundations for modern AI in 1957.
He died in 2011.
What is the current state of the AI sector?
The AI industry is growing at an unprecedented rate. The internet will connect to over 50 billion devices by 2020 according to some estimates. This means that everyone will be able to use AI technology on their phones, tablets, or laptops.
Businesses will have to adjust to this change if they want to remain competitive. They risk losing customers to businesses that adapt.
